Aedeagus morphology as a discriminant marker in two closely related Cactophilic species of Drosophila (Diptera; Drosophilidae) in South America Anais da ABC (AABC)
Franco,Fernando F.; Prado,Pedro R.R.; Sene,Fábio M.; Costa,Luciano F.; Manfrin,Maura H..
Drosophila serido and D. antonietae are sibling species belonging to the Drosophila buzzatii cluster. Morphologically, they can only be discriminated by quantitative traits. In this paper we analyze the length and equalized average curvature of four regions of the aedeagus of D. antonietae and D. serido. Specimens of D. serido and D. antonietae were classified correctly 96.74% of the time. Based only on the variable that most contributed to the discrimination of the groups (equalized average curvature of the arch IV of the aedeagus), we observed significant intraspecific morphological divergence in D. serido in relation to the D. antonietae, in agreement with other markers. The high morphological divergence in equalized average curvature of the arch IV of...

Biological aspects of Autoplusia egena (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae, Plusiinae) Neotropical Entomology
Specht,Alexandre; Vogt,Tatiane G.; Corseuil,Elio.
Autoplusia egena (Guenée) is a moth distributed throughout the Western hemisphere. The larvae have already been found feeding on several different plant families, including important crops such soybeans and beans. To contribute to the knowledge of its biology in laboratory conditions, and considering the duration and the morphometry of each development stage, a laboratorial rearing was accomplished at 25 ± 1°C, 70 ± 10% RH and 14h photophase. The larvae were fed with black bean leaves and the adults were fed with a honey solution at 10%. The results, expressed by the mean (± SE), for the periods of each stage were: egg 3.0 ± 0.00 d; larva 15.7 ± 1.25 d; pre-pupa 1.9 ± 0.05 d; pupa 8.8 ± 0.09 d and adult: longevity 12.1 ± 0.95 d, pre-oviposition 5.4 ± 0.50...

Bruguiera (Rhizophoraceae) in the Indo-West Pacific: a morphometric assessment of hybridization within single-flowered taxa Naturalis
Duke, N.C.; Ge, X.-J..
The first putative hybrid tree species of the genus Bruguiera (Rhizophoraceae), B. × rhynchopetala, is reported from mangrove forests of China and Australia. It was described from China previously as a variety of B. sexangula. The hybrid is acknowledged as B. gymnorhiza × B. sexangula with parent species restricted to different parts of the Indo-West Pacific. The hybrid is recognised at north-eastern and south-eastern parts of the overlap area between parent distributions, but it appears absent in western parts. Further local assessments are needed across the range. Hybrid status is supported by: 1) intermediate and shared morphological characters; 2) distribution limited to areas of co-occurrence of B. gymnorhiza and B. sexangula; and 3) molecular...

Morphological variation in a secondary contact between divergent lineages of brown trout (Salmo trutta) from the Iberian Peninsula Genet. Mol. Biol.
Hermida,Miguel; San Miguel,Eduardo; Bouza,Carmen; Castro,Jaime; Martínez,Paulino.
The aim of this study was to analyze the morphological variation of brown trout (Salmo trutta) in the Duero basin, an Atlantic river basin in the Iberian Peninsula, where a spatial segregation of two divergent lineages was previously reported, based on isozyme, microsatellite and mtDNA data. In these studies, two divergent pure regions (Pisuerga and Lower-course) and several hybrid populations between them were identified. Morphological variation was evaluated in 11 populations representative of the genetic differentiation previously observed in the Duero basin, using multivariate analysis on 12 morphometric and 4 meristic traits. A large differentiation between populations was observed (interpopulation component of variance: 41.8%), similar to that...

Prenatal Stress Caused by Movement Restriction Induces Changes in the Appendicular Osseous Development of CF-1 Mice Progeny International Journal of Morphology
Lizana,Pablo; Henríquez,Ricardo; Muñoz,Pablo.
Prenatal stress has been associatedwith alterationsin weight andbody size, as well as disturbances inthe process ofdevelopingskeletalossification, occurringduring childbirth and the early stagesof life. However, theeffectevidence of prenatal stresson bone growthand development duringthe gestation periodhas been low; therefore, it is unknown whether these alterations are associated with potential for growth disorders Because of this, thestudy aims todetermine theshort-term effectsof prenatal stress onthe CF-1mouse bone structure growth inyour date of birth. The female mice were divided randomly in two groups: controlled (n=2) and stressed (n=3). The latter was put under stress by means of movement restriction during the last week of gestation. The taxonomic status of Myotis levis levis and Myotis levis dinellii (Mammalia: Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Miranda,João M. D.; Bernardi,Itiberê P.; Sponchiado,Jonas; Passos,Fernando C..
Investigating the Myotis levis complex is important for understanding the taxonomic status of the two subspecies currently recognized in it: Myotis levis levis (I. Geoffroy, 1824) and M. levis dinellii Thomas, 1902. Both M. levis levis and M. levis dinellii have been recently observed in sympatry in Argentina. This finding suggests that these populations might in fact correspond to distinct species rather than subspecies, as they have traditionally been designated. By using a multivariate morphometric approach, we demonstrate that M. l. levis has secondary sexual dimorphism in several measurements, with females being larger than males; sexual dimorphism was not detected in M. levis dinellii. However, we found morphometric differences between the two taxa....

Oliveira,Roseli F.; Silva,Rogério R.; Souza-Campana,Débora R.; Nakano,Márcia A.; Morini,Maria Santina C..
Morphological traits, such as size and shape, may reflect a combination of ecological and evolutionary responses by organisms. Ants have been used to evaluate the relationship between the environment and species coexistence and morphology. In the present study, we analyzed the morphology of workers of Gnamptogenys striatula Mayr in different landscapes from the Atlantic Domain in southeastern Brazil, focusing on the variation in the morphological attributes of these populations compared to those from a dense ombrophilous forest. Eighteen morphological traits of functional importance for interactions between workers and the environment were measured to characterize the size and shape of the workers. In general, the results show that ants of urban areas...
